Welcome to Austin House Assisted Living!

Austin House offers three distinct programs, each designed to meet the different needs of different populations.

Dementia Behavior Program – “Sycamore”

Sycamore, a self-contained program, is dedicated to providing care to those individuals with dementia who exhibit behaviors that are problematic at home or in another placement setting. These behaviors may include, but are not limited to:

  • Aggressive behaviors toward family members, caregivers, peers and/or staff
  • Resistance to care, including combativeness
  • Physically agitated or restless behaviors
  • Poor fluid or nutritional intake
  • Difficulty complying with rules, expectations
  • Repetitious and/or nuisance behaviors

A team approach, led by a clinical psychologist, is used to develop a structured, consistent, caring approach to the identified behavior(s). This approach is implemented by all staff, thus often minimizing or eliminating the problematic behavior(s). The staff are specifically trained in this model of care. Patience, flexibility and a good sense of humor are important characteristics of our employees in this program.

Traditional Assisted Living – “The Terrace”

The Terrace offers a safe, comfortable and nurturing environment for persons in need of help with their activities of daily living such as meal preparation, housekeeping, bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, and/or medication management. This program is appropriate for persons with medical/physical limitations. It is also appropriate for persons with dementia because it is a secured program to reduce the possibility of wandering away. Entrance and exit is controlled by a coded keypad.

The apartments are double-occupancy which alleviates some of the isolation and loneliness many feel when they live alone. Residents are given an emergency alert pendant to use if they are in need of immediate help. Each unit also has an emergency pull cord in the bathroom.

Cognitively Clear Behavior Program – “The Garden”

The Garden, a self-contained program, is the only assisted living program in Northern Arizona to specifically focus on the needs of persons with significant behavior problems. We serve a population often experiencing mental illness whose behaviors are at various points in the behavior spectrum. Problematic behaviors may include, but are not limited to:

  • Not cooperating with necessary treatment/care
  • Using verbally abusive, offensive language
  • Demonstrating verbally/physically disruptive behavior
  • Obsessive-compulsive behaviors
  • Excessive fluid or nutritional intake
  • Repeated elopements/AWOL behaviors

This approach is implemented by all staff, thus often minimizing or eliminating the problematic behavior(s). The staff are specifically trained in this model of care.
